Semex's Balanced Breeding Gives Dairymen Options

The April 2009 proof release placed the stamp of approval on reliable second crop Semex sires such as 0200HO04779 R-E-W Buckeye and 0200HO03218 Gillette Brilea FBI, while ushering in sires designed to meet the needs of dairymen everywhere. Entering the Semex lineup are sires designed to positively impact bottom lines such as 0200HO09804 Crockett-Acres Eight, sires that meet the needs of Red & White clients, and newly proven sires for those looking for the best proven sons of Semex greats Talent and Titanic.

Buckeye daughters are known for their calving ease, high production, ideal feet & legs and exceptional rear udders, making him one of the most popular BW Marshall sons available today.  The April proof round echoed these same comments dairymen have been making since his release in 2005, and has solidified his place as a Second Crop Success.  Buckeye’s credentials put him in elite ranks for those looking to up their profitability, with +1914M, over 2.52 PTAT, +2.48 for both FLC and UDC, and +2.10 PL and a 6% Calving Ease.  Showing the Power of Balanced Breeding™ and the strength of Semex’s proving program in the USA, Buckeye’s proof has only increased since his initial release, gaining over 140 TPI points overall and adding over 2500 daughters since January 2009.

Similar to Buckeye, FBI ticks all the boxes for most dairymen, with equivalent figures of +1908M, +2.67 PTAT, +2.05 UDC and +1.90 FLC with +463 NM$ and low 2.76 SCS.  FBI also answers the quest for high fertility, scoring above average on the Sire Conception Rating (SCR) rankings and is a Semex Repromax™ sire.  With over 4000 daughters in his production proof and over 2200 in his type proof, FBI can easily be considered a highly reliable sire.

Semex’s 0200HO05049 Morningview Ashlar is still one of the breed’s highest options for combined Fat & Protein with the necessary type traits to sustain production at +43 PTAP, +63 PTAF, 2.00 PTAT and 3.00 UDC, with a low 2.87 SCS and 506 NM$.  These figures place him at #66 on the International TPI listing and  #4 LPI with similar traits of +70 Fat, +51 Protein, +11 Conf, +15 Mammary System and 2.84 SCS, 108 Herd Life and 107 Daughter Fertility.

Newly proven 0200HO09804 Crockett-Acres Eight is Semex’s first Oman son.  From a famous Mtoto dam, with eight more generations of VG or EX, Eight is the highest ranking newly-proven sire in Canada at #6 LPI.  Dairymen describe their Eight daughters as a dream at 109 Herd Life, 2.46 SCS, 112 Calving Ability, 105 Daughter Fertility, making them hardly noticeable in the barn.  Eight converts well to the USA TPI with over 130 lbs combined Fat & Protein and those workability traits dairymen love at 2.55 SCS, 3.3 PL, 5% Calving Ease, a high 567 NM$ and almost +1.40 PTAT.

Additional newly proven sires include the highly anticipated arrival of Semex’s first Titanic and Talent sons.  These sires are exceptionally proven and are designed to quench the breed’s need for sons from two of the industry’s greatest sires.

Titanic’s first Semex proven son, 0200HO03404 Willsona Silas, is from a Convincer dam out of the famous Glen Drummond Splendor family, and makes his debut as the #70 TPI sire.  Breeders can expect Silas to deliver the high fat and positive deviations that lead to profitable production.  His type proof offers no faults with +2.16 PTAT, +1.71 UDC and an impressive +2.39 FLC.  Delivered with a 2.7 PL and 2.97 SCS, Silas is an excellent breeding option for dairymen looking to improve components while not making sacrifices.

Known as the “Udder King,” Semex’s 0200HO07030 Ladino Park Talent *RC has impacted both Red & White and Black & White bloodlines around the world, transmitting tremendous udder traits and ranking high still today at +3.23 UDC with a +2.90 PTAT and 4.0 PL.  All this, and sitting as the breed’s highest SCR bull, Talent’s popularity knows no bounds.  Now, his sons are arriving and Semex has two that are certain to create similar excitement.

0200HO00379 Morsan Frontrunner *RC, is Talent’s son from a James out of the highly credible and internationally recognized Ravens.  Dual-sampled in the USA and Canada, Frontrunner has been a sire that has been on the red enthusiasts’ radar for some time and arrives with international appeal.  His TPI proof echos Talent’s with +2.76 PTAT, +2.31 UDC, +2.31 FLC and is an SCS improver at 2.85.  Breeders can expect the same great mammary systems, with the soft, silky texture and good attachments and support that Talent delivered, with the added bonus of dairyness and style.

0200HO01937 West Port Bookman Red is a true Red & White sire combining Semex’s two most famous *RC sires, Rubens on the maternal side and Talent on the paternal side.  Like Frontrunner, Bookman also was proven in the USA and Canada and shows many of the same characteristics of Talent.  He sires cows that excel in their mammary systems, showing great improvement over herdmates, and generate the same great rumps that lead to healthy cows, like Talent.  Bookman’s +2.97 PTAT, +3.10 UDC and +2.00 FLC match Talent and offer an appealing profile.

Semex is proud of its proving programs and is excited to answer dairymens’ demand for sons from its most successful sires, high production sires, high-ranking TPI and LPI sires and successful Second Crop Sires.  The April 2009 proof round further proves the reliability of Semex’s proving program and our determinition to provide a product offering that meets the demands of dairymen everywhere, whether they milk 50, 500 or 5,000 cows.
