Semex Holstein sires once again showed their strength and power from beginning to end at the 2010 World Dairy Expo. Stud code 200HO dominated the show with an impressive 47% (196) of the 417 head shown being sired by one of the 25 Semex sires working the ring this year.
More than just participants in the show, these 196 individuals were exceptional! Ninety-eight of them placed in the top 10 of their respective classes, including 11 class winners, nine second places and 10 third places.
Leading the pack was the three-time consecutive Premier Sire of the world's most famous show, Semex's own Braedale Goldwyn. This 2010 Premier Sire had 85 daughters grace the coloured shavings, 49 placed in the top 10, with these eight topping their classes:
·1st Fall Calf & Hon. Mention Jr. Champion: Lindenoord Goldwyn Albany
·1st Spring Yrlg & Reserve Jr. Champion: Rockymountain Goldwyn Trisha
·1st Winter Yrlg & Jr. Champion: Craigcrest Rubies Gold Rejoice
·1st Milking Yrlg: Comco Goldwyn Loll
·1st Jr 2 Yr Old: Rosedale Lexington
·1st Jr 3 Yr Old: Deboer Gldwn Snow Velvet
·1st Sr 3 Yr Old, Intermediate Champion & Hon. Mention Grand Champion: Idee Goldwyn Lynley
·1st 4 Yr Old: Brackleyfarm Goldwyn Stella
Goldwyn was not alone in the race for Premier Sire. Semex sires Wilcoxview Jasper and EK-Oseeana Aspen both made their presence known. Jasper sired 42 contenders, with 23 placing in the top 10. His top performers were:
Mr Sam son 0200HO02137 Pine-Tree Sid had one daughter featured in the Semex Walk of Fame, Micheret Alexandra Sid. This young Sid stole the hearts of many when she stood in the pack, and she didn't disappoint on the coloured shavings! Alexandra placed 5th overall in the very large Sr 2 Yr Old class, while receiving Best Udder and Bred & Owned awards. Sid continues to gather momentum, and is already designated a Semex Designer Series™, Repromax™ and Health$mart™ sire, making him a true 'triple threat' Semex sire.
Another Semex Designer Series™ sire, 0200HO03280 Gillette Final Cut, gained additional fans following the Sr. 2 Yr Old class, as his daughter Bonaccueil Camee Final Cut stole the show. Camee placed 1st in the class and joined an all Semex cast of contenders for the Intermediate Championship.
"Ladies and gentlemen, for Intermediate Champion, we pulled out five cows that fit the pattern of what we're looking for," said Official Judge Brian Craswell of Prince Edward Island. "Our milking yearling is a heifer that has a great, great future. She's got the size and substance and a great mammary system. She's angular and clean boned. The same applies to our Jr. 2-year-old. She's very dairy and very correct. Our Sr. 2-year-old has a beautiful frame, she's hard topped and dairy. And our pair of Sr. 3-year-olds are both extremely dairy cows. Our first Sr. 3 is a true-type cow that we really appreciate with her feminine head and neck. For Intermediate Champion, this winning Sr. 3-year-old can't be denied. She has the balance, the style, the dairy quality and she's so much like the true type model cow. We're giving her the advantage over the second place Sr. 3 because she's got a little more capacity over the beautiful beautiful youthful cow we have for reserve."
The beautiful Goldwyn daughter, Idee Goldwyn Lynley was named Intermediate Champion (and later Hon. Mention Grand Champion) and the 2nd place Sr. 3 Yr Old by Comestar Stormatic, Whitaker Stormatic Rae, was Reserve Intermediate Champion. Goldwyn continued domination into the senior cow classes, placing an unprecedented 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the very large 4 Yr Old Class with four complete and balanced cows:
· 1st 4 Yr Old: Brackleyfarm Goldwyn Stella
· 2nd 4 Yr Old: Winterbay Goldwyn Lotto
· 3rd 4 Yr Old: Spierdyke Madame Wyn
· 4th 4 Yr Old: Rolling-Spring G Escence
"When I think about our true type model cow," said Judge Craswell. "She's walking out in first place. She's got a great udder. She's got balance and strength, not to take anything away from our recently fresh cow in second. But I'm giving her the advantage today because she's just more show ready. She's more feminine through the head and neck and has a little more dairyness than our recently fresh third-calf cow in second. Our second place cow has a phenomenal udder and is best udder in the class. She uses that mammary system, her strength of attachments, her symmetry from fore to rear udder and her cleanliness when she's coming at you to go over the beautiful cow in third. Our third and fourth place cows are very similar."
The 'Udder King' and one of Semex's Millionaire Sires, Ladino-Park Talent *RC, sired one of the most talked about cows at World Dairy Expo, Rainyridge Talent Barbara. Barbara placed 1st 5 Yr Old and was Best Udder in class, underlining Talent's tremendous ability to sire cows with extreme width, height and veination in their mammary systems.
At the end of the day, however, one cow was recognized above all others as exhibiting more quality from end to end, having a very clean bone, great strength and a great udder. No stranger to the tanbark, Harvue Roy Frosty is a tremendous individual and a repeat Supreme Champion from 2009. Frosty was also the Reserve Champion of the 2009 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Semex is proud to offer two of her sons, 0200HO02553 Duckett-SA Federal by Shottle and 0200HO02554 Duckett-SA Fremont by Goldwyn, the Premier Sire himself!
Hon. Mention Champion of the Senior Show was a Comestar Stormatic daughter, Flechedor Stormatic Zita. Zita placed 2nd to Frosty in the Aged Cow class while receiving the Best Udder award and was named Champion Bred & Owned of the entire show.
Overall, 25 different Semex sires were represented on the colored shavings, showing Semex's ability to sire the current and future legends at the world's largest Holstein show.
