Semex Sponsors WDE Virtual Farm Tour

Semex is pleased to have been selected as a sponsor of one of the World Dairy Expo (WDE) Virtual Farm Tours in 2010.
WDE Virtual Farm Tours allow WDE visitors to tour dairies from around the U.S. without leaving the grounds. Presented free of charge each day during the show, Virtual Farm Tours focus on a variety of management topics, including: farm longevity, innovative reproductive tools, grazing benefits, managing transition cows, a research dairy herd, family succession, environmental stewardship and robotic calf feeders.
Semex’s Virtual Farm Tour is slated for Wednesday, September 29 and features Stewart Farms Inc., of Nampa, Idaho.
Joe Stewart manager of Stewart Farms Inc. is the third generation to manage the dairy that his grandfather started 1940. Along with his parents, Jim and Marcella, and brother Jere, Joe has expanded the farm to 500 acres and has peaked at 900 cows with a RHA of 30,000 lbs.
With an eye on the future and another on maximizing profitability, Joe Stewart helped develop and implement technologies that allow Stewart Farms to evaluate the individual cow’s profitability and contribution to the herd based on a daily profit/loss system. This system has allowed them to willing step back to 750 cows and 12,473 kgs RHA to cut feed costs by $2(US)/cow/day, increasing profitability and helping the dairy compete with larger commercial dairies.
Relying heavily on new technologies as they become available, the Stewarts’ heat detection is done through a neck worn activity system, Heatime™. This system allows them to detect the optimal breeding time, thereby reducing labor and input costs. Since implementing this system they’ve reached a 54.5% conception rate, reduced days open by almost 30 days, dropped their calving interval to 12.6 months and reduced services per conception from 3.4 to 2.4.
Heatime™ is sold through Semex’s ai24™ system with Micro of Amarillo, Texas. This program is the complete solution for efficient AI, offering ... Leer más...

Semex Delivers 11th Millionaire Sire!

Recently, Semex sire 0200HO04779 R-E-W Buckeye reached the pivotal Millionaire Sire mark at Semex, joining 10 other elite Semex sires that have each produced over one million doses of semen.
Semex continues to lead the industry in delivering sires that are the ‘bestsellers’ of their time, the truest testament of breeder satisfaction and approval. As Semex’s 11th Millionaire Sire, Buckeye is joining an elite fraternity of industry icons including: Ladino Park Talent *RC; Hanoverhill Inspiration; Madawaska Aerostar; Startmore Rudolph; Comestar Lee, Leader, Outside and Lheros; Stouder Morty; and Oliveholme Aeroline.
These sires represent Semex’s unique ability to combine genetics, production, sales and customer demand into one package. Without a doubt, Buckeye is the complete package sire.
Proven in August 2005 through the USA Premier™ young sire program, Buckeye’s popularity was instantaneous, arriving as one of the world’s most popular BW Marshall sons and ranking #4 TPI. In February 2006, he climbed to the #2 TPI position, commanding international respect for his desirable production, solid type and in-demand health traits.
“Buckeye’s arrival as a high TPI and LPI sire made him attractive to all breeders worldwide,” says Pierre Laliberte, Semex Alliance Senior Vice President, Genetics & Research. “High milk, strong udders, feet & legs, great calving ease and low somatic cell scores make Buckeyes the trouble-free cows that spell profitability everywhere.”
The Buckeye daughters have always been known for their exceptional feet & legs, mobility and flatness of bone. Their tremendous udders are silky, very well-attached and are designed to handle the large volumes of milk that his pedigree dictates. But it wasn’t just Buckeye’s type and production that allowed him to appeal to so many breeders; the addition of his easy calving scores put him in line with the needs of many commercial dairymen.
“The Buckeyes are the daughters you never hear any ... Leer más...

Semex Jerseys Lead Breed On Both Sides of Border

April 2010 Genetic Evaluations: Breed Leaders in Semex’s Jersey Lineup on Both Sides of the Border.

Semex sires continue to dominate the Lifetime Profit Index following the arrival of Canada’s first genetic evaluation run that included genomic data from the Jersey breed in early April.

Semex is home to the top three active AI sires standing in Canada for GLPI. They are 0200JE00314 Hollylane Lilibet’s Legacy, 0200JE00946 Sunset Canyon Dice-ET and 0200JE00430 Lencrest On Time-ET at +1746, +1542 and +1350 for GLPI, respectively. A further scan of this all-important list reveals that the 200JE code is home to 5 of the top 10 of the breed’s top bulls and 11 of the top 20 bulls for GLPI.

Exciting newcomer to the proven line-up is high fertility Repromax™ sire 0200JE00142 Lencrest Tyler-ET EX-91-CAN, a son of former Semex great Willoa Laser, debuting at +1108 for GLPI. This is high enough for 11th position in the breed and boasts a balanced breakdown across production, conformation and functional traits. All this makes Tyler very similar to his older maternal brothers in the Semex lineup, 0200JE00423 Lencrest Blackstone-ET and 0200JE00430 Lencrest On Time-ET who are both also Repromax™ sires.

Canada’s type leader since January 2010 and Semex Repromax™ sire, 0200JE00427 Select-Scott Minister-ET, added 18 additional daughters to bringing his total daughters classified to 82 daughters in 49 herds, maintaining his supremacy in the conformation department at +13, two points higher than his nearest rival.

In the US, veteran 0200JE00990 Sunset Canyon RP Militia-ET has added over 1300 daughters to his proof since August 2009, and has strengthened his numbers considerably. He is currently #5 for JPI on the active list at 160 and ranks #1 in the breed for NM$, CM$, PL and DPR, traits many commercial dairymen are focusing on today. His linear breakdown shows that he improves feet & legs and stature while not taking away from strength.
