Semex & Chinese Delegation Sign Agreement For Canadian Simmental Genetics

Semex was proud to host a delegation of nine officials from the Xilin Gol League Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Bureau from Inner Mongolia and their agent China Hengrui Development (Beijing) Corportation Limited on September 14, 2010. These Chinese delegates met with Paul Larmer, Semex Alliance Chief Executive Officer and Myles Immerkar, Semex Alliance Beef Programs Manager, signing a contract in which the Semex Alliance will provide China with over 100,000 doses of Canadian Simmental semen in 2011. This agreement is the continuation of a long-standing relationship between China and Canada that has seen great success for a number of years, with high quality Semex genetics making a positive impact in the Chinese cattle industry. In 2009, Semex exported approximately 25,000 doses of Simmental semen to China. This was followed by an additional 50,000 doses in 2010. These genetics are already making a difference in China's beef industry, showcasing increased growth, early maturity and increased milk production. "We truly believe in the power of the balanced Canadian Simmental genetics, and we look forward to continuing to provide the Chinese producer with top quality, profitable genetics," states Immerkar. Following the contract signing, the group visited bull housing facilities at Gencor, one of the Semex Alliance's Canadian Partners, where the group evaluated several beef bulls including PHS Polled Worldwide 14W. Worldwide will be a major component of Chinese 2011 breeding program. The group also visited the breeders of Worldwide, Prospect Hill Simmentals, at their farm in Granton, Ontario. The Chinese guests toured the farm, saw the Prospect Hill breeding program firsthand and inspected Worldwide's dam, Rolling Acres Fern. "China's ... Read More...

Semex Alliance, Partners & Holstein Canada Launch National Genomic Testing Service

Holstein Canada and the Semex Alliance along with its four partners CIAQ, Eastern Breeders, Gencor and Westgen have united to provide genomic testing services for dairy producers. The program, called GenoTest, provides an efficient option for Canadian producers to take advantage of this technology. Brian Van Doormaal, Holstein Canada CEO, states that "Genomic testing gives dairy producers access to more accurate information the day the calf is born. The GenoTest service provides a cost effective option to take advantage of genomics for both genetic improvement and herd management." GenoTest provides genomic testing of females using the 50K panel or the newly available 3K panel. The 50K cost has been significantly reduced from its former level to $160/test for Canadian registered animals and provides a higher level of accuracy and reliability. The 3K cost is $47/animal and yields approximately 80% to 90% of the accuracy of the 50K test. GenoTest also gives dairy producers a choice of method for submitting DNA samples. Traditionally, tail hair has been the primary collection method but there have been some issues, particularly collecting sufficient DNA from young animals. With GenoTest, producers can also submit DNA using nasal swabs, which has also been proven to be a very reliable and effective method of DNA collection, especially for young animals. Nasal swab kits cost $5 each (included in above fees) and need to be ordered in advance from Holstein Canada or a Semex Alliance partner. ... Read More...

Known to transmit the 'complete package,' Morty daughters are powerful, upstanding individuals stamped with extremely high and wide rear udders with an incredible will to milk. These traits made Morty extremely popular in all environments. "Morty sires cows that dairymen everywhere appreciate," says Pierre Laliberte, Semex Alliance Senior Vice President, Genetics & Research. "His daughters work hard in every environment, making him one of our most popular sires available today. His sons are now beginning to make their mark. Famous Goldwyn Brothers Offer Rare & Exceptional Opportunity

Hailing from an exceptional Durham dam, Gillette-I Durham Jericho EX-CAN 10*, with records to over 22,000 kg/48,000 lbs in 305 days and nearly 90,000 kgs/200,000 lbs lifetime, plus three more VG or EX dams, dictated success for Jordan and Jerrick. "Jericho went VG-87 in her second lactation, but was bred right back to carry. So when she calved for the third time she really bloomed to her full potential," says Julien Chabot, Semex Sire Analyst and buyer of Jerrick and Jordan. "She had a Freelance heifer that now is EX-93. Jericho went VG-89 early in lactation, and a few months later moved up to EX. Her first flush was to Canyon-Breeze Allen, which produced an EX-91 daughter. The second flush was to Goldwyn just after he was made available. It produced Jerrick, Jordan and a heifer, Jenny. She is VG as a first calver and has one of the highest LPI direct genomic values in the Gillette herd." Being split embryo brothers makes Jordan and Jerrick 100% identical in their DNA, offering a rare and exceptional opportunity. However, in their initial proof we will see small differences in their breakdowns due to maternal influence of the daughters as well as environmental impact. The biggest difference at this point, is in their daughter numbers. As the breed's newest #1 LPI sire, Designer Series™ sire 0200HO05575 Gillette Jordan arrives after months of speculation and anticipation without disappointment. "These cows are easy to find," says Carl Saucier, CIAQ Progeny Analyst. " Just look for the best feet & legs and ... Read More...
